John Stewart, Guest Conductor

John Stewart studied at Western Reserve Academy for three years, and then received a BA in composition and theory from Yale University, where he was the assistant director of the Yale Glee Club, conducted the Apollo Glee Club and was a member of the famed Whiffenpoofs. After Yale he earned an MA in composition and theory from Brown University where he was the assistant director of choral activities. After a post- graduate year at New England Conservatory, Stewart was an apprentice at the Santa Fe Opera, and his operatic debut as Pinkerton followed soon after. For twenty years John Stewart sang with most of the leading opera companies and orchestras in Europe and the US, including such companies as the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, The Opera Theatre of St. Louis and many others.

In September of 1990 he joined the music department of Washington University in St. Louis, where he is Director of Vocal Activities, directing the Concert Choir of Washington University, and helping direct the opera program, as well as teaching private voice, vocal pedagogy, and vocal literature. On the annual Chancellor’s Concert at Washington University, Mr. Stewart has conducted among other works the Mozart Requiem, Verdi’s Quattro Pezzi Sacri, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms, The Rio Grande by Constant Lambert, The Poulenc “Stabat Mater” and the Polovetsian Dances of Borodin.

In February 1994 and 2004 the Concert Choir of Washington University was chosen to sing at the Missouri Music Educator’s Annual Convention. The Concert Choir has sung in Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City and other mid-western venues. Mr. Stewart is in frequent demand as clinician and judge, as well as for his inspiring master classes. In the summer months Mr. Stewart conducts at the Festival of the Arts in Spearfish, South Dakota and has taught at the University of Miami’s Summer in Salzburg program.


  • Of Angels and Heavenly HarpSaturday, December 6 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, December 7 at 8:00 PM. Both concerts will be held at St. James the Greater Catholic Church.

    Continuing to uphold the tradition of our popular annual Christmas Concert, the SLWC presents Of Angels and Heavenly Harps. This concert, held in the beautiful sanctuary of St. James the Greater in Dogtown, will feature music written for harp and voices. Two local harpists will be our guest soloists – one classical harpist and an Irish harpist to accompany the more folk-like settings. The concert will feature Benjamin Britten’s classic work for women’s voices and harp, Ceremony of Carols and John Rutter’s lively “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day” as well as many Christmas classics. The performance will begin with a special harp prelude certain to set the stage for this beautiful concert. This concert will be conducted by guest conductor, John Stewart of Washington University.

  • From Bingen to BerlinSaturday, March 14 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, March 15 at 3:00 PM. Both concerts will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church.

    This concert will feature music pulled from the varied repertoire of women’s song written by German composers: Hildegard von Bingen’s mystic chants and spiritual awakenings followed by the lush harmony and beauty of Brahms’ works (written for the Hamburg Women’s Chorus), and ending with a few comedic and racy women’s choruses of Kurt Weill’s opus. This performance will take the listener through a musical history of Germany’s greats and is certain to entertain.

  • American Folk MusicSaturday, May 9 at 8:00 PM and Sunday, May 10 at 3:00 PM. Both performances will be held at the Union Avenue Christian Church.

    In American Folk Woman, the SLWC will explore America’s fascination with folk music. From Appalachia to the Deep South folk music sprung up all throughout the land. The concert will explore specifically the role of women in folk music and provide a backdrop of historical and anecdotal information about the beginnings of American folk music. The concert will also feature folk-dancing which will accompany some of the selections as well as local folk musicians to add an authentic flair to our show.
